Of this reported figure, the most common occupational injuries revealed were: falling from heights, which accounts for 28% of all fatal occupational injuries, and being struck by falling objects, which accounts for 9% of all fatal occupational injuries in Malaysia.
Sharing on the importance of occupational safety and health, and how employers and employees should begin prioritizing being safe at work, 3M Malaysia demonstrated its fall protection Full-Body Safety harness and self-retracting lifeline from 3M DBI-SALA.
3M, the global science company that never stops inventing, successfully showcased their safety and fall protection technologies at the 16th Asian Oil, Gas & Petrochemical Engineering Exhibition (OGA 2017), held recently at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 11 - 13 July.
In a study conducted by the Ministry of Health Malaysia entitled “A Review of Occupational Injury Research Malaysia”, it was reported that between years 2000 and 2013, Malaysia encountered an average annual incident of 9.2 fatal occupational injuries per 100,000 workers. This alarming figure is higher in comparison to western countries like the U.S. with 4.0 per 100,000 workers (US Bureau of Labour Statistics, 2006) and that of Great Britain where it affected 0.71 per 100,000 workers (Health and Safety Executive UK, 2006).
Whilst demonstrating to visitors on how 3M™ DBI-SALA® products can help prevent fatal injuries from falls, Mohd Azhar Kamaruddin, Technical Specialist for Fall Protection at 3M Malaysia’s Personal Safety Division says, “It is not only necessary for workers to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whilst working at heights, but it is also important that one knows how to wear it properly and to maintain it accordingly. At 3M, our solution covers the basics of every personal fall arrest system and can be described as the ABCD’s of fall arrest - A for Anchorages, B for Body Support, C for Connectors and D for Decent while rescuing to retrieve a fall arrested worker.”
During the exhibition, 3M was able to display other tools which can help prevent injuries from falling objects such as 3M™ DBI-SALA® Hard Hat Coil Tether, 3M™ DBI-SALA® Safe Bucket and 3M™ DBI-SALA® Single Tool Holster with 2.3kg load rated capacity.
3M Malaysia also provides professional training covering product usage, confined space entry, emergency rescue as well as compliance courses.
